By Shiromani Associates – Chartered Accountants

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the apex regulatory body responsible for ensuring food safety and hygiene across the country. Established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the FSSAI governs the licensing and registration of food businesses in India.

Whether you’re a food manufacturer, trader, restaurant owner, or involved in food distribution or storage—FSSAI registration is mandatory to operate legally and assure your customers of food quality and safety.

Why FSSAI Registration is Important

✅ Legal Authorization to Operate a Food Business
Builds Consumer Trust with FSSAI Logo and License Number

Avoids Penalties, Legal Actions & Business Disruptions
 Facilitates Easy Expansion & Branding

At Shiromani Associates, we provide expert assistance in obtaining the right type of FSSAI license based on your business operations.

Types of FSSAI Registration / License

Depending on the size, turnover, and nature of your food business, FSSAI offers three types of licenses:

1. Basic FSSAI Registration

  • For small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakh

  • Ideal for petty food retailers, small manufacturers, and home-based kitchens

2. State FSSAI License

  • For mid-sized food businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore

  • Applicable to small-to-medium restaurants, food manufacturers, storage units, transporters, etc.

3. Central FSSAI License

  • For large-scale food businesses with turnover above ₹20 crore

  • Also required for importers/exporters, large manufacturers, and businesses operating in multiple states

FSSAI Registration Requirements & Labelling Norms

For any food or beverage product sold in India, proper labeling and compliance with FSSAI norms is essential. The following details must be clearly printed on every packaged food item:

  • Name of the product

  • List of ingredients and additives

  • Nutritional information

  • Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian mark

  • Flavouring agents (if used)

  • Net quantity

  • Date of manufacture and expiry

  • Batch or Lot number

  • Name and address of the manufacturer or packer

  • Country of origin (for imported food)

  • FSSAI license number

  • Usage instructions (if required)

Failure to comply with these labeling requirements can lead to cancellation of license and legal consequences.
